MCM Thundercat Guards.

The Thundercat Racing Association (inc) of Australia (TRCA -INC) requested Peter Hallett to design a propeller guard to fit both Tohatsu and Yamaha 50hp outboard motors. The scope was to provide adequate protection with minimum performance loss. By 1994 the 4 vane Thundercat guard was in use. In order to achieve minimal performance loss, the use of narrower lateral vanes would be required. To achieve a satisfactory level of longevity, 2205 duplex stainless steel was used, and is to this day.

New Development

The new design “Midcoast Marine Nozzle Guard” for Thundercat racing  is near completion and ready for testing. The new design actually compresses aerated water, producing better drive, the shape of the ring band (nozzle) actually makes turning easier. The nozzle is CNC machined to a perfect circle which provides equal forces being transferred through the prop guard.

The propeller tip, to inside prop guard clearance  is much closer to avoid prop slip. The wider spinal vane touches (follows) the leading edge of the gearbox. The lateral vanes are also wider. The 2 skeg vanes wrap around the skeg of the gearbox and are secured by 2 x 8mm stainless steel bolts. A fitting template, instructions and all attaching bolts are supplied with the MCM Thundercat Guards.
